Description

President Mahmoud Abbas' surge of popularity following his bid for U.N. recognition for a Palestinian state appeared to give him a stronger hand against the rival Hamas group as they prepare to resume talks on a stalled power-sharing deal next week. But all of a sudden many Palestinians and Arabs were surprised by a long-awaited prisoner swap agreement under which Hamas agreed to release Israeli captive Gilad Shalit in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Speculation was rife on the political implications of the surprise agreement. Some commentators said after long-drawn out negotiations, Israel decided to strike a deal with Hamas "to spite President Mahmoud Abbas for his unilateral initiative requesting full U.N. membership" defying strong opposition by Israel and the United States. Other analysts said the move by both Israel and Hamas "could be a prelude for further overtures between them that would help move the stalled peace process forward." In any case the agreement was warmly welcomed by Palestinians and Israelis alike this week. In this sense the deal was considered as a blow intended to embarrass and weaken Abbas, who heads the mainstream Fatah group.
